How to Install TrueNAS Scale?

TrueNAS Scale is a powerful Linux-based network storage solution, perfect for both home and enterprise servers. Its flexibility, container support, and virtualization features make it ideal for users looking for more than just basic storage.

This step-by-step guide explains how to install TrueNAS Scale from scratch using Balena Etcher to create a bootable USB installer.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, make sure you have the following:

  • A computer or server compatible with UEFI or BIOS boot.

  • A USB drive with at least 8 GB of storage.

  • A computer with internet access to download required files.

  • A second USB drive or disk to install TrueNAS (the installer USB will be overwritten).

  • Keyboard, monitor (or remote access via IPMI/iKVM if it’s a server).

1. Download TrueNAS Scale

  1. Go to the official  TrueNAS website:
    https://www.truenas.com/scale/

  2. Click "Download TrueNAS SCALE".

  3. Select the latest stable version and download the file with the .iso extension.

2. Download and Install Balena Etcher

  1. Go to https://www.balena.io/etcher/.

  2. Download the version for your operating system (Windows, macOS, or Linux).

  3. Install it like any other program.

3. Create the Installation USB with Balena Etcher

  5. Click "Flash!" to begin.

  6. Wait for the process to complete (it may take a few minutes).

Important: All data on the USB drive will be erased.

4. Boot from the USB

  1. Insert the USB drive into the system where you want to install TrueNAS.

  2. Power on the system and enter the boot menu (usually F12, ESC, DEL, or F2, depending on your motherboard).

  3. Select the USB drive as the boot device.

5. Install TrueNAS Scale

  1. When the installer loads, select:
    "Install/Upgrade TrueNAS SCALE".

  2. Choose the target disk where TrueNAS will be installed (do not select the installer USB).

  4. Set a password for the root user.

  5. Wait for the installation to complete. Once done, remove the USB and reboot the system.

6. Configure TrueNAS from Your Browser

  1. After rebooting, the system will display an IP address on the screen.

  2. Open a web browser on another computer connected to the same network.

  3. Enter the IP address in the browser, for example:
