How to create a VM in Proxmox VE?


We open the Proxmox web interface and click on the blue "Create VM" button at the top.

Creating a Virtual Machine 

General Tab:

  • Node: proxmox (it is the only one we have).
  • VM ID: 100 (an ID is generated to differentiate each virtual machine; you can use another number if you prefer).
  • Name: Windows10 (the chosen name does not accept spaces or certain symbols).
  • Resource Pool: blank (we don't have one).

OS Tab:

  • Storage: local (where we have the ISOs stored).
  • ISO Image: Win10_22H2_x64_Spanish.iso (previously uploaded).
  • Type: Microsoft Windows.
  • Version: 11/2022 (we are using the latest published version of Windows 10).

System Tab:

  • Graphics Card: Default.
  • Machine: Default (i440fx). We could choose q35 if we want to assign a physical GPU to a virtual machine.
  • Firmware: OVMF (UEFI).
  • Add EFI Disk: Check the box.
  • EFI Storage: local-hdd (this is the 240 GB hard drive we have).
  • Format: QEMU disk image (qcow2).
  • Pre-Enroll keys: Check the box.
  • SCSI Controller: VirtIO SCSI Single.
  • Qemu Agent: Check the box.
  • Add TPM: Check the box.
  • TPM Storage: local-hdd.
  • Version: v2.0.

Disks Tab:

  • Bus/Device: SATA | 0 (if we had more drives, we would change the number).
  • Storage: local-hdd.
  • Disk Size (GiB): 60.
  • Format: QEMU disk image.
  • Cache: Default (None).
  • Discard: Do check.

CPU Tab:

  • Sockets: 1 (depends on the physical sockets of your real computer).
  • Cores: 4 (also depends on available resources).
  • Type: Default (KVM64).

Memory Tab:

  • Memory (MiB): 4096 (the amount depends on the free RAM in your physical computer).

Network Tab:

  • Bridge: vmbr1 (the second network card in our computer).
  • VLAN Tag: no VLAN.
  • Firewall: Checked.
  • Model: Intel E1000.
  • MAC Address: auto.

Confirm Tab:

A summary of everything selected is displayed.

  • Start after created: Do not check.

Finish.


After a few seconds, the 100 (Windows10) option will appear in the left menu.
